Govt gives proposal to extend UN-OHCHR’s term by six months
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has forwarded a proposal to the Council of Ministers to extend the term of United Nations Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (UN-OHCHR) by another six months.
The OHCHR, and other UN bodies and diplomatic agencies in Nepal have been pressuring the government to extend its term by two years.
UN-OHCHR had written to the foreign ministry a few days ago to extend its term by two years.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal is not positive on extending OHCHR's term for long due to differences between the UN-OHCHR and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
NHRC has been saying, an international human rights agency is not necessary in Nepal when there is a national one doing the same job.

Brahman, Chhetri groups oppose new list of indigenous nationalities
A few Brahman and Chhetri groups have opposed the new list of indigenous nationalities prepared by a high level government taskforce. Formed in April last year, the taskforce has listed 85 ethnic groups as indigenous nationalities, up from 59 groups. The taskforce de-listed three ethnic groups and added 29 others. A total of 120 ethnic groups had filed application to be included in the list.
The Brahman and Chhetri groups have warned of protests if they are not included in the list. The groups have announced to submit a memorandum to the prime minister objecting the list prepared by the taskforce led by Om Gurung.
The report of the taskforce has merged Bankariya into Chepang and mentions that the two other groups- Frees and Chhairotans- were removed because no member of these nationalities was found during field visits.
Gurung said, Brahman and Chhetris do not meet the criteria set by United Nations and thus are not incorporated.

Govt refuses to fund Jha’s Indian pilgrimage
The government has said it will not bear the expenses of Vice President Parmananda Jha’s pilgrimage to India.
Jha is leaving on a private pilgrimage trip to India on Friday. However, it is not clear which holy places in India will he visit during the trip.
A cabinet meeting held in Singha Durbar, the seat of the government, Wednesday morning decided not to bear the expenses of VP Jha’s trip to India after concluding that it was a ‘private visit’.
Informing the media about the cabinet’s decision after the meeting, Minister for Tourism Sharad Singh Bhandari said that the government will however bear the expenses of VP Jha’s security guards and aides who will accompany him during the trip.
Jha was recently reappointed to the vice-presidential post which had remained defunct for almost six months after he refused to take oath of office and secrecy in Nepali as ordered by the Supreme Court.
The meeting also decided to give more facilities to all the non-gazetted government employees.
